Will Barter

I started thatching in 2001 after helping out at harvest time in West Lavington, Wiltshire. There followed a seven year apprenticeship working for Higham Thatching, where I was fortunate to be taught by Ivor Steel. I have since worked with many other thatchers. I see sharing skills as a great way to keep learning new techniques and improve existing ones.

For the past few years I have been developing my woodworking and have enjoyed the diversity. From coppicing hazel and chestnut in the woods for spars and fences, milling oak to use for building and garden furniture, to building my own home and creating garden structures from scratch. This has been incredibly rewarding.

Recently I’ve been asked to run various courses including a roundhouse at Malborough College Summer School, another at Oxenwood Activity Centre, and demonstrations for A level archaeology students and primary schools. These have all been great fun and I love passing on the skills I have learned to others.

I am a member of Wiltshire Master Thatchers.
